Christian Leadership at Victoria Baptist Church

Being a leader or helper at Victoria

Being a leader or helper in a church like Victoria is a wonderful privilege that has responsibilities attached. As the Core Leadership Team we want you to know that we value all you do for the gospel very highly indeed.

As leaders we know that people form an opinion of Christ by what they see in us when we are leading or helping. So our expectations are about the people we are in God as much as the job we do for God. Christian leadership is more than applying a set of skills to run a group or get a job done, it's living a life that glorifies Him.

We're in this together

So as a leadership team we're setting out here the basic spiritual expectations we have of ourselves as well as all the leaders and helpers in the church. We hope you will find them helpful.

We will engage with the wider church

It is our expectation that we will be relating to people in the church in other ways than just through the group we are leading or helping. Being part of the church family is a vital ingredient of Christian leadership and it prevents us from being alone. So having a group of friends who are also part of the church is one of our expectations.

We expect every leader will be a church member and all leaders and helpers should come to worship at church regularly. It is here that we feed our souls and are inspired to walk with Christ.

'Let us consider how we may spur one another on towards love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another' Hebrews 10:24-25

We will provide good quality Christian input.

Our church's vision is to provide a place where people come to faith and grow to be like Jesus Christ. So it is our expectation that every organisation and group under the church's umbrella will do this in a clearly identifiable way.

This is a high ambition and it means that when we do things, we will seek to do them well and to the glory of God. So our expectation of each other is that we will actively encourage and nurture the faith of the people we lead or help. This means being known as a person who lives a grace-filled Christian life.

We expect all of our leaders and helpers to be enthusiastic advocates for Christ and our church. We believe God's work is tarnished when the church is bad-mouthed, or treated with cynicism, especially by leaders either in public or privately.

'Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.' Eph 4:29

We will lead by example.

We recognise that God is glorified, not just in the tasks we do, but the people we are. So the question is this: 'If the people I lead turn out to be like me, will they be more like Jesus Christ too?'

We expect all of our leaders and helpers to make every effort to display the fruit of the Spirit; love, joy, peace, patience and gentleness and so on. We also want to be inclusive in our approach to people. Sadly, many leadership failures can be traced back to poor character traits, not lack of skill and we expect you to ...

'Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.' 1 Timothy 4:16

We hope these expectations, although challenging to all of us, will be helpful to you; and if you feel you would like to talk about them please contact one of us. It will be a pleasure to have a conversation and pray with you.
