Discipleship

What does it mean to be a disciple of Jesus?

Jesus called twelve disciples (Mark 3:13-16) and commanded them to make disciples:
Jesus came to them and said,

“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.

And surely, I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Matthew28:18-20)

Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.” (Matthew 16:24)

“In the same way, those of you who do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciples.” (Luke 14:33)

To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples.” (John 8:31)

“By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” (John 13:35)

At Victoria Baptist Church we believe that everyone confessing Jesus as Lord and trusting in Him as Saviour, has begun the journey of discipleship.

As brothers and sisters in Christ, we have been adopted into God’s family and look forward to the unfading inheritance of eternal life.
Whether we have been a disciple for a few days or many decades we can encourage and learn from one another.

When the zeal and passion of a new disciple is joined with the wisdom and experience of a more mature disciple, both are built up, challenged and encouraged.

We believe this is the New Testament pattern for discipleship and church growth.

The goal of this growth is the glory of God and His blessing poured into more and more lives.
